Materi Kelas IV

Ordinal Numbers

Ordinal number dipakai untuk menyatakan tingkat, urutan atau posisi ke-sekian. Contoh: peringkat, lantai, urutan kejadian, dll.

Pertama-tama ayo kita bahas gimana cara menyulap angka biasa (cardinal number) menjadi ordinal number.

Untuk menyatakan ordinal number, kita menambah suffix ke angka posisi. Ada 4 suffix yang biasa digunakan: -st, -nd, -rd, atau -th.

• Suffix “-st” dipakai untuk urutan ke-1 (1st-first), dan setiap ke-sekian puluh satu (21st-twenty first, 51th-fifty first, etc).
• Suffix “-nd” dipakai untuk urutan ke-2 (2nd-second), dan setiap ke-sekian puluh dua (32nd-thirty second, 62nd-sixty second, etc).
• Suffix “-rd” dipakai untuk urutan ke-3 (3rd-third), dan setiap ke-sekian puluh tiga (43rd-forty third, 73rd-seventy third, etc).
• Suffix “-th” dipakai untuk urutan-urutan lainnya, termasuk ‘semua’ urutan belasan.
• Contoh: ke-4 (4th-fourth), ke-5 (5th-fifth), ke-9 (9th-ninth), ke-10 (10th-tenth).
• Contoh belasan: ke-11 (11th-eleventh), ke-12 (12th-twelfth), ke-13 (13th-thirteenth), etc.
• Contoh lain: 57th-fifty seventh, 861st-eight hundred and sixty first, 249-two hundred and forty ninth, etc.

Lalu gimana cara penggunaannya? Ordinal number selalu diikuti oleh singular noun. Kenapa singular? Karena hanya ada 1 ‘kelompok benda’ yang berada di tingkat/posisi/urutan tersebut. Contoh:

• Anak ke-3 = third child.
• Lantai (ke-)21 = twenty first floor.
• Ulang tahun ke-56 = fifty sixth birthday
• Ranking (ke-)1 = first rank.
• (sesuatu) yang ke-15 = fifteenth one.

Ordinal number juga biasa dipakai untuk menyatakan tanggal, dengan menambahkan ‘of’ (British). Contoh:

• 4th of July
• 17th of August
• 31st of October

Nomor urut/ tingkatan adalah nomor yang digunakan untuk menunjukkan urutan, misalnya 1st, 2nd, 3rd, dan seterusnya. Kebanyakan dari angka-angka tersebut ditambah dengan 'th', misalnya fourth (four-th), sixth (six-th), seventh (seven-th). Namun ada juga yang tidak beraturan seperti first (1st), second (2nd), third (3rd), fifth (5th), ninth (9th), dan twelfth (12th). Berikut ini daftar nomor urut dari 1st sampai 19th :
